ChromeOS provides a built-in command line interface for troubleshooting called the Chome Shell or CROSH. It is simple to use and the commands are Unix based.

*NOTE: The Chromebook in question has to be put into Developer Mode before it can access the CROSH shell.

3 Steps total

Step 1: Log into the Chromebook and go to the Chrome browser

CROSH is accessed through the Chrome browser so you'll need to start there.

Step 2: CTRL + ALT + T

Press [CTRL] + [ATL] + [T] on the Chromebook this will open a new tab with the CROSH shell.

Step 3: Toubleshoot Away!

You can now run commands like ping and Unix commands like top to troubleshoot and assess any problems with the device. Command network_diag helps a lot with figuring out connectivity issues with the Chromebook. You can type in the 'help' command for a list of basic commands to help you navigate the interface and you can type 'help_advanced' for an even more detailed list.

ALSO: you can SSH with the CHROSH shell using the 'ssh' command.

The CHROSH shell is a little known feature of the ChromeOS operating system and deserves a little more attention from people who service Chromebooks. It is very helpful and can save you a lot of time and frustration with troubleshooting.

Can the startup script be modified within the shell so that I can have certain tasks start when the Chromebook is booted?

I think all of that stuff is strictly dictated with the Google Admin Console through policies, but I'm not entirely sure.

Most useful command seems to be network_diag --hosts this will check in with all google services it connects to and test the route as you know these connections are a lifeline to the chromebooks.. Windows will have a very hard time catching up to these things..they are cheap and are saturating the market where applicable

From a complete curiosity stand point how does Crosh compare to other shells like Bash? Also has it been seen a lot of new tools over the years? I had a Chromebook some years back (like 2011) and remember Crosh had nice syntax but was very limited in how it could interact with the system.

As as far as I know that when you invoke the command 'shell' in Crosh it pretty much makes Crosh a Bash shell. You can navigate the file systems of ChromeOS and the like. I have not tried Bash script yet, though so there is a limit to what you can do in Crosh. SSH capability was newly added I believe over the past year or so.

Crosh requires your Chromebook to be placed into developer mode in order to access it. So if that is disabled in Admin Console then no worries.
